Teachers of students with visual impairments and other professionals should be aware of the following strategies and adaptations that may be used to promote O&M for children with visual impairments who use wheelchairs:

use of longer footrests to prevent accidental injury to students’ feet

use of a lap tray as a “bumper” for waist-height obstacle detection

attachment of curb feelers—flexible wires that stick out to the sides of the chair—to the front wheels to provide warning of objects on the sides

modification of the hand trailing technique (for example, use of a patting technique in place of sliding the hand) to prevent injury to students who use motorized wheelchairs

use of a rigid cane with a roller tip, if appropriate, as prescribed by the O&M specialist

adjustment of cane length to accommodate the width of a wheelchair or the increased speed of a motorized wheelchair, as determined by the O&M specialist
